Seated Shoulder Depression (S5)

Flow

Sit holding the WAV with an overhand grip at the outer bands. With straight arms float the WAV up to shoulder height. Elevate the shoulders keeping the same arm position. Gently depress the shoulders by sliding them down the back, allowing them to rest on the top of the trunk. Continue to lift and lower the shoulders as you maintain an elongated spine.

Focus

Encourage shoulder centration with cervical axial elongation for healthy posture.

Cues

VERBAL: Remain tall through your spine and notice the relationship of the shoulder girdle to the rest of the body.

BE MINDFUL: Let the movement of your shoulders to be easy and fluid. * Can you feel your shoulders near your ears and then how they slightly separate to create space between each other and the spine as they slide away from the ears? * Feel the support for your neutral spine with your stabilizing breath around your pelvis.

WAV INTERACTION: Allow the WAV to awaken your spine, feeling length from your seat to the sky. * Keep calm and quiet.

Common Compensations

  • Breath Hold/Valsalva
  • Decentration - Lumbar Region
  • Decentration - Cervical Reclination
  • Elevated/Adducted Scapula/Shoulder Girdle
